Does ChatGPT recommend my business? A 10-minute check any owner can do

A step-by-step way to find out whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews name your business when customers ask, what the results mean, and the first fixes if you're missing.

Short answer: Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the exact questions your customers ask, such as 'Who's the best HVAC company in Tampa?', five or six ways each, and write down which businesses get named. If you appear in most answers, protect it. If you appear in few or none, your business data, reviews or third-party coverage are too thin for AI to vouch for you, and each is fixable.

Why this check matters

A growing share of your future customers will never see your website. They will ask an AI assistant who to call, read a short answer with two or three names, and call one. If you are not in that answer, you were never in the running.

The good news: finding out takes ten minutes and costs nothing.

The check

Step 1: Write down your money questions

Think about how a customer would actually ask, in plain words. Not keywords. Questions. For an HVAC company in Tampa:

  • "Who's the best HVAC company in Tampa?"
  • "My AC stopped working in Brandon, who can come today?"
  • "Recommend a reliable air conditioning repair company near Westchase."
  • "Who installs heat pumps in Tampa and has good reviews?"
  • "I need an honest AC company in Tampa, who should I call?"

Five or six questions, covering your most profitable services and the neighborhoods you serve.

Step 2: Ask each AI, fresh

Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Use a logged-out or fresh chat where you can so your own history does not color the answers. Ask each question, one at a time. Then run two or three of them through a normal Google search and read the AI Overview at the top, if one appears.

Step 3: Log the names

Make a simple table: question, platform, businesses named, in order, and whether it cited a source. That table is your baseline.

Step 4: Ask the follow-up

For any answer where you are missing, ask: "Why those companies?" The AI will tell you what it leaned on: review counts, specific review phrases, a local news story, a directory listing, years in business. That is your to-do list, written by the thing you are trying to convince.

Reading your results

Named in most answers, near the top. You are in good shape. Protect it: keep reviews flowing and keep your business data consistent. Re-check monthly, because this moves.

Named sometimes, usually lower down. AI knows you but is not confident. Typically your data is inconsistent somewhere, or your review recency has slipped. Both are quick fixes.

Named rarely or never. AI either does not know you well or has no reasons to trust you over the names it gave. Start with the foundation below. This is a visibility problem, not a quality problem, and it is fixable.

Named with wrong details. Wrong phone, old address, services you do not offer. Your listings disagree somewhere. Find the outlier and fix it, then watch the AI correct itself over the following weeks.

The first fixes if you are missing

  1. Make every listing match your website. Name, address, phone, hours, services, service area. Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Bing Places, Facebook, BBB, and the top directories for your trade.
  2. Get recent reviews. Ask after every job, by text, with the direct Google link. Recency matters as much as volume.
  3. Answer the questions on your site. Create or rewrite one page per service in a customer's words, with an FAQ. Spell out your service area by town.
  4. Get mentioned somewhere credible. A local paper, a chamber page, a sponsorship write-up, a supplier's "find a dealer" page. One real mention beats a hundred directory spam links.
  5. Re-run the check in 30 days. Same questions, same platforms, same table.

Questions owners ask

Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me?

Usually one of three reasons: your business information is inconsistent across the web so AI isn't confident about you, your reviews are fewer or older, or your competitor is mentioned on sites AI trusts (news, directories, roundups) and you aren't. An audit shows which.

Can I just ask ChatGPT to add my business?

No. There's no form. AI learns about you from your website, listings, reviews and coverage. Changing those changes what it says.

How often should I re-check?

Monthly. AI answers shift as the models update and as your competitors' footprints change. A monthly log is the only way to know whether your work is landing.
